Every 10 years, the census data is used to redraw the district boundaries for Congressional, State House and Senate, county and school board seats. The county commission is responsible for generating and approving the districts for their members, as is the school board. The others are drawn by Legislative committees and approved by the full legislative bodies. Congressional districts are decided by both House and Senate, while each of those bodies decide their own district boundaries.
As of January 2022, the county commission and school board districts have been approved, and it is expected that the Legislature will act in session sometime in March for the others.
It should be noted that the boundaries are drawn using the census blocks and therefore are a function of those who live in them, whether they are registered voters or not. Typically, since we have a lot of non citizen residents in Palm Beach County, a “balanced” district map may or may not be “balanced” politically. For example, CC3, the “Hispanic District”, has more than 50% Hispanic residents, yet only about 32% of the registered voters identify that way.
On this page, we will examine the proposed (by the Legislative committees) maps and attempt to project their political makeup. To do this, the proposed maps are projected on the current precinct map and computed on a “best fit” basis. Since some of the new boundaries cross existing precinct boundaries, the SOE will be configuring a new set of precincts when the maps are final. Therefore, political estimates are approximate.
